Build my sales resumeSales is the most numbers-driven resume there is — and it still has to clear a machine before a human reads it. Employers run applications through applicant tracking systems that filter for quota attainment, CRM experience, and territory growth, and a resume that buries its numbers (or scrambles in a two-column template) gets screened out before a sales manager sees it.
The upside: sales resumes live and die on one question a hiring manager can answer in five seconds — did you hit quota? Give them that number up top, back every claim with a figure, and you'll stand out from a stack of reps who only listed duties.

What makes a sales resume work
Three things, in order:
- It leads with attainment. Quota percentage and revenue closed belong in the first third of the page — in your summary and your most recent role, not hidden at the bottom.
- Every claim has a number. "Grew the territory" means nothing on its own. "Grew territory revenue 35% year over year" tells a manager your impact instantly.
- It's machine-readable. Single column, standard headings, real selectable text — no tables, text boxes, or graphics that confuse resume-screening software.
The format: keep it boring on purpose
- One page for under ~10 years of experience; two pages only for long, senior careers.
- Reverse-chronological — most recent role first. It's what sales managers and applicant tracking systems both expect.
- Standard headings: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications. Don't rename them to "My Wins" or "Where I Crushed It."
- Web-safe fonts (Arial, Calibri, Georgia), 10–12pt body.
- Save and send a real-text PDF — not a scan, screenshot, or image.
Contact and summary
Put your name, phone, email, city/state, and LinkedIn at the top. Recruiters do check LinkedIn for salespeople, so include it. Then lead with a tight professional summary — three or four lines naming your market, your years, and your headline number.
Sales Representative with 5 years selling B2B SaaS to mid-market accounts. Skilled in outbound prospecting, discovery, negotiation, and CRM (Salesforce). Hit 120% of a $1.2M quota for six straight quarters and ranked in the top 5% of a 90-person team.
That summary names the market (B2B SaaS, mid-market), the core skills a screen scans for, and two hard numbers. Swap in inside vs. outside, B2B vs. B2C, or transactional vs. enterprise to match the posting.
Experience: quantify everything
For each role, name the product, market, and quota — then write bullets that pair an action with a number or outcome: quota attainment (%), revenue closed, pipeline generated, win rate, average deal size (ASP), sales-cycle length, ranking, and new logos landed.
Sales Representative, Northbridge Software — Chicago, IL · 2021–Present
- Achieved 118% of a $1.2M annual quota, ranking in the top 10% of a 90-person sales team two years running.
- Closed $1.4M in new business across six straight quarters of quota attainment.
- Built a pipeline at 3x quota — 60+ qualified opportunities per quarter — through disciplined outbound prospecting.
- Grew territory revenue 35% year over year by expanding key accounts and upselling existing customers.
- Shortened the average sales cycle 20% by introducing a sharper lead-qualification framework, and won back 10 lapsed accounts worth $200K.
Weak vs. strong, same task:
- ❌ Responsible for calling leads and managing accounts in the territory.
- ✅ Generated a $3M pipeline from 40 cold calls a day, converting 22% of qualified opportunities to closed-won and beating quota by 18%.
Quantify every bullet: the metrics that matter
If a manager can't put a number to it, it reads as filler. Cover as many of these as honestly apply:
- Quota attainment — the headline: "112% of quota," "top 5% of the team."
- Revenue closed — "$1.4M in new ARR."
- Pipeline generated — "3x pipeline," "60+ opportunities per quarter."
- Win rate & deal size — "won 28% of qualified deals at a $45K average."
- New logos, ranking, efficiency — "landed 22 new accounts," "President's Club, 2024," "cut the sales cycle 20%."
Rankings and awards (President's Club, Rep of the Quarter, top-10% finishes) are worth calling out explicitly — they're third-party proof you outperformed peers.
Skills: split selling, tools, and the rest
Screens scan for both what you do and the systems you do it in. Pull the exact terms from the posting where they honestly apply, and group them so the section stays scannable:
- Sales process: Prospecting, cold calling, lead qualification, discovery, product demos, negotiation, closing, upselling.
- Pipeline & accounts: Pipeline management, account management, quota attainment, relationship building, territory planning.
- Tools / CRM: Salesforce, HubSpot, Outreach — name the specific platforms; they're exact-match keywords the screen looks for.
Don't render skills as proficiency bars or graphics — resume-screening software can't read them. Write the word.
Education and certifications
- Bachelor's degree — list it plainly (e.g. B.A., Business Administration — University of Illinois, 2020). A degree isn't always required in sales, so don't over-weight it.
- Add training or certifications if you have them — a documented sales methodology (Sandler, Challenger, MEDDIC, SPIN) or a Salesforce Certified Administrator credential are genuine keywords. Never invent one.
Early-career or transitioning in? Lean on the summary and skills, and quantify anything you can — call volume, conversion rate, or retail sales figures all translate.
Sales-specific resume-scanner tips
- Lead with metrics, not responsibilities — the first line a screen and a manager read should contain a number.
- Match the posting's language. If it says "inside sales" or "SDR," use that term; if it says "B2B SaaS," don't only write "software sales."
- Name your CRM. "Salesforce" and "HubSpot" are among the most-filtered sales keywords — list the ones you've used.
- Spell out and abbreviate once — "average selling price (ASP)" — so you match both search variants.
Common mistakes to avoid
- No quota numbers. Attainment percentage is the single most important line on the page — if it's missing, the resume reads as "didn't hit target."
- Listing duties instead of results. Every rep "manages a pipeline"; show the pipeline's size and what closed.
- Soft-skill filler. Replace "results-driven, motivated go-getter" with an actual result.
- No CRM named, so keyword screens skip you.
- A two-column "designer" template that scrambles in resume-screening software.
